Wei Jingsheng

Wei Jingsheng (born 1950) is a Chinese human rights activist and dissident, best known for his involvement in the Chinese democracy movement. He authored the essay "The Fifth Modernization," posted on the Democracy Wall in Beijing in 1978, and was subsequently held as a political prisoner for a total of roughly 18 years. He was deported to the United States on medical parole in 1997 and in 1998 established the Wei Jingsheng Foundation in New York City.
