Weston La Barre was born in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, the son of a banker. He graduated from Princeton University in 1933 and began fieldwork with the Yale Institute of Human Relations, where he collaborated with Richard Evans Schultes on studies of the peyote cult among the Plains Indians. He received his doctorate from Yale in 1937 with a thesis on peyote religion. Later in his career, he taught classic psychoanalytic works to Duke medical students.
