William Erwin Eisner (1917–2005) was an American cartoonist, writer, and entrepreneur. He was among the first to work in the American comic book industry and is best known for his series The Spirit, which ran from 1940 to 1952 and was recognized for its innovative storytelling and artistic style. In 1978, he introduced the term "graphic novel" through his work A Contract with God. He also contributed to the academic study of comics with his book Comics and Sequential Art in 1985. The Eisner Award, named in his honor, recognizes excellence in the comics medium. He was one of the three original inductees to the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame.
