William E. Barrett was born in New York City and published his first poem at the age of 15. He moved to Denver, Colorado, in 1916 with his family and later attended Manhattan College. In 1923, he became the Rocky Mountain advertising manager for Westinghouse, and in 1929 he left the company to pursue writing. From 1941 onward, he served as an aeronautics consultant with the Denver Public Library and was a member of several literary and professional organizations.
