William Hale White, known by his pseudonym Mark Rutherford, was a British writer and civil servant. He used a pseudonym and occasionally attributed his work to a fictional editor, Reuben Shapcott, which reflected his private nature. His literary output included works published under the Mark Rutherford name, though he remained largely reclusive. He was not to be confused with William Hale-White, his son, or the English footballer Mark Rutherford.
