William Hope Hodgson (15 November 1877 – 19 April 1918) was an English author known for his work in horror, fantastic fiction, and science fiction. He wrote essays, short fiction, and novels, often drawing from his experiences at sea to create authentic settings in his stories. His "Sargasso Sea Stories" are a series of linked tales set on the ocean. His novels, such as The House on the Borderland (1908) and The Night Land (1912), include cosmic themes and maritime horrors. Hodgson also wrote poetry, though few of his poems were published during his lifetime. He was recognized as a photographer and was a bodybuilder. He died in World War I at age 40.
