William Lawrence Shirer (1904-1993) was an American journalist and war correspondent, author of The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, a history of Nazi Germany widely read and cited for over 50 years. He was a foreign correspondent for the Chicago Tribune and International News Service, and the first reporter hired by Edward R. Murrow for "Murrow's Boys" at CBS, known for his broadcasts from Berlin.
