William Steig

William Steig (1907–2003) was an American cartoonist, illustrator, and writer of children's books. He is best known for the picture book Shrek!, which inspired the film series of the same name. Other notable works include Sylvester and the Magic Pebble, Abel's Island, and Doctor De Soto. Steig was recognized internationally for his contributions to children's literature, serving as the U.S. nominee for the Hans Christian Andersen Awards in 1982 as a children's book illustrator and in 1988 as a writer. His work combined wit, imagination, and a distinctive visual style that resonated with both children and adults.
