Maxim Gorky, pseudonym of Aleksey Maximovich Pyeshkov (1868-1936), was a Russian writer considered the father of Soviet literature and founder of socialist realism. He began a nomadic life at 12, self-educated, publishing his first story in 1892. His 1898 collection Sketches and Stories brought immediate fame; his novel Mother (1906) became the prototype revolutionary novel. His unfinished final work, The Life of Klim Samgin (1927-36), is considered his masterpiece.
