Jun'ichirō Tanizaki (1886–1965) was a Japanese author recognized as one of the most significant figures in modern Japanese literature. His work explored a wide range of themes, including sexuality, erotic obsession, and the complexities of family life within the context of 20th-century social change. His stories often examined the tension between Western influences and traditional Japanese culture. In 1964, he was among six authors shortlisted for the Nobel Prize in Literature.
