Yüan Wei

Wei Yuan (1794–1857) was a Chinese scholar-official, historian, and geographer, and a major reformist thinker of the late Qing dynasty. Born in Shaoyang, Hunan, he was among the first Qing scholar-officials to advocate reform of the military and government and the adoption of Western methods following China's defeat in the First Opium War.
