Yasunari Kawabata was a Japanese novelist and literary critic. He was a member of the Japanese Academy of Arts and received the Cultural Merit Award and the Order of Culture. He was the first Japanese author to win the Nobel Prize in Literature, which he received in 1968. He held the rank of Third Degree of the Order of the Purple and the First Class of the Order of Culture. He was a representative figure of modern Japanese literature who was active from the Taisho period through the pre-war and post-war periods.
