Yurii Olesha was a Russian and Soviet novelist known as one of the greatest Russian novelists of the 20th century. His works navigated the challenges of censorship by blending superficially pro-Communist messages with deeper artistic complexity. He was associated with the Odessa School of Writers, which included figures such as Ilf and Petrov, Isaac Babel, and Sigismund Krzhizhanovsky. Olesha lived from 1899 to 1960.
