Zora Neale Hurston (January 7, 1891 – January 28, 1960) was an American author, anthropologist, and filmmaker. She is known for her work documenting and portraying the experiences of Black people in the early-1900s American South. Hurston published research on hoodoo and wrote four novels, with Their Eyes Were Watching God being her most popular. She also authored more than 50 short stories, plays, and essays. Hurston was an African American folklorist, novelist, short story writer, and advocate for civil rights.
