Beka Cooper is now a Dog, a member of the Provost's Guard in Corus, tasked with keeping the city safe. However, the city faces a growing problem—counterfeit coins are being used in shops, leading merchants to raise prices. The Dogs trace the coins to gamblers from Port Caynn. Beka is sent to Port Caynn, where she works undercover in the gambling scene. There, she meets Dale Rowan, a charming banking clerk. Though she feels a growing attraction to him, Beka remains focused on her mission. As she investigates further, she travels north to an abandoned silver mine. To succeed, she must change her approach and learn to be more like a Bloodhound, relying on her instincts to uncover the truth.
