About “A Clergyman's Daughter”

One of Orwell’s earlier novels follows the story of a young unmarried woman who lives with her father, a village rector. After a dinner with a local bachelor, she wakes up eight days later in London’s East End on the Old Kent Road with no memory of how she got there. Without money, she joins some vagrants in Kent to pick hops and later returns to London, where she ends up sleeping on the streets of Trafalgar Square.
