Perce Spender, a Londoner of working-class background, becomes the twelfth Earl of Ellesmere upon the death of a distant relative and takes up residence at Chetton Hall to arrange the sale of the estate. The morning after a family party, he is found dead, leaving the Chief Constable with a list of suspects that includes one son in jail, another who ought to be, a daughter overly interested in the will, and the new Countess of Ellesmere, Dixie, who has been involved with a small-time crook.
