A Long Way Gone is a memoir that recounts Ishmael Beah's experiences as a child soldier during the civil war in Sierra Leone in the 1990s. The book describes his flight from his village after a rebel attack, his time living on the run, his recruitment and brainwashing by an army unit that used drugs and violence, and his eventual rescue by UNICEF and rehabilitation through a program that helped him reconnect with his uncle.
