The Passion According to G.H. is a 1964 novel by Clarice Lispector that follows a well-to-do Rio sculptress named G.H. While in her maid's room, she sees a cockroach crawling from the wardrobe. Panicking, she slams the door, crushing the insect, and then watches it die. The novel builds toward a spiritual crisis, culminating in a famous and shocking scene that is considered one of the most impactful in Brazilian literature. Lispector herself considered this novel the one that best met her artistic demands.
