In this Newbery Medal-winning book set in 12th century Korea, Tree-ear, a 13-year-old orphan, lives under a bridge in Ch’ulp’o, a potters' village famed for delicate celadon ware. He becomes fascinated with the potter’s craft and, after being taken on as a helper by master potter Min, faces challenges such as hard labor, Min’s temper, and his own lack of knowledge, ultimately undertaking a long journey on foot to present Min’s work in hopes of a royal commission, arriving with only a single celadon shard.
