About “A Tale of a Tub”

A Tale of a Tub is Jonathan Swift's first major work, written between 1694 and 1697 and published in London in 1704. It is a prose parody divided into sections of "digression" and a "tale" about three brothers, each representing a major branch of western Christianity from the 17th-century English perspective. The work satirizes the Roman Catholic and Anglican churches as well as English Dissenters. It was criticized for its profanity and irreligion, with William Wotton condemning it for treating "God and Religion, Truth and Moral Honesty" as a game to show the author's contempt for Christianity.
