Clarence Fortinbras, a retired accounting professor and author of a standard textbook on accounts receivable, is investigating financial irregularities at National Calculating Company, a struggling business-machine firm, after obtaining a court order for a thorough audit. He is found strangled with the cord from his adding machine, prompting Sloan Guaranty Trust to send senior banker John Putnam Thatcher to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death and determine what Fortinbras discovered.
