*Alamut* is a novel by Vladimir Bartol, first published in 1938 in Slovenian. It tells the story of Hassan-i Sabbah and the Hashshashin, a secret group of warriors, and is named after their fortress, Alamut. The novel's central theme is the idea that "Nothing is an absolute reality; all is permitted." It served as one of the inspirations for the *Assassin's Creed* video game series.
