About “Alfiya”
Alfiya of Ibn Malik is a rhymed poetic book of Arabic grammar written by Imam Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Malik Al-Tai Al-Jiani in the 13th century. It is considered one of the most important grammatical and linguistic systems, as it attracted the attention of scholars who wrote commentaries on it. Its full title is al-Khulāsa al-alfiyya. The work was widely used by students of Arabic grammar, who preferred it over other texts due to its organization, clarity, and concise presentation of grammatical and morphological rules. It was taught in many religious and linguistic institutions. According to historian Al-Maqqari, Alfiyya was modeled after Al-Durra al-alfiya by Ibn Muti al-Zawawi. At least 43 commentaries were written on it, and it was one of two major foundations of early education in Arab societies until the 20th century. (Summary adapted from Wikipedia, CC BY-SA 4.0.)
