About “All the Light We Cannot See”

Marie Laure is a blind girl who lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where he works. When she loses her sight at age six, her father builds a detailed model of their neighborhood so she can navigate it. When the Germans occupy Paris, they flee to Saint-Malo, where Marie Laure's great uncle lives. In Germany, an orphan boy named Werner and his sister Jutta are fascinated by a radio Werner finds. Werner becomes skilled at fixing radios, which leads him to a military academy and later to Saint-Malo. There, his path crosses with Marie Laure. Anthony Doerr's novel interweaves their stories, showing how people try to be good to one another despite war. The book took ten years to write and is Doerr's most ambitious work. It was published in 2014.
