Following the fall of Baghdad, two Iraqi boys discover armed men looting the city zoo, leading to the ransacking of a concealed underground weapons lab and the release of something horrific. Seven years later, Louisiana state veterinarian Lorna Polk finds a shipwrecked fishing trawler with a cargo of exotic animals exhibiting disturbing deformities and heightened intelligence, prompting her to team up with U.S. Border Patrol agent Jack Menard to uncover the origin of the cargo and a threat tied to fractal science and genetic engineering.
