About “Alte Meister”

A novel by Thomas Bernhard set in Vienna on one day around 1985. Reger, an 82-year-old music critic, has for over thirty years sat on the same museum bench before a Tintoretto painting; narrated by Atzbacher, the book follows Reger's recollections of his late wife and his contempt for aspects of Austrian society, culminating in his re-engagement with the world after her death.
