About “Apologia Confessionis”

The Apology of the Augsburg Confession was written by Philipp Melanchthon in response to the Pontifical Confutation, the Roman Catholic reply to the Lutheran Augsburg Confession of 1530. It was meant to defend the Lutheran position and counter the Catholic response. The document was signed by Lutheran leaders at the Smalkaldic League meeting in 1537 and later included in the German and Latin editions of the Book of Concord. As the longest text in the Book of Concord, it provides a detailed Lutheran defense of their beliefs and a thorough explanation of the doctrine of Justification.
