About “Arcadia”

Arcadia moves between the year 1809 and the present day at an elegant estate owned by the Coverly family. In 1809, thirteen-year-old Lady Thomasina and her tutor explore intellectual and romantic themes as the estate's landscape is transformed into Gothic gardens. Present-day scenes show the family's descendants and two scholars investigating a possible scandal from 1809 involving Lord Byron. The play shifts smoothly between the centuries, examining truth, time, and the differences between classical and romantic perspectives. It also considers how sex disrupts life's patterns, a factor Newton overlooked. The work explores themes of knowledge, passion, and the passage of time.
