About “Arthur C. Clarke's Richter Ten”

Lewis Crane survived the 1994 Los Angeles earthquake but lost his family. Now a thirty-seven-year-old seismologist, he has developed a unique theory of earthquake prediction to prevent others from suffering his loss. His goal is to prove his theory by predicting an "unpredictable" quake. He identifies the Reelfoot Rift as the site of a massive earthquake, expected to measure over 8.5 on the Richter scale. His team, including geologist Dan Newcombe, imager Lanie King, engineer Burt Hill, and mysterious Sumi Chan, confirms his findings. The quake threatens Memphis, Indianapolis, Nashville, and Chicago, dividing the nation between those who believe Crane and those who dismiss him as mad. As the disaster approaches, Crane faces the loss of his reputation, his friend, and the woman he loves. He believes a larger quake, a Richter 10, is coming and knows how to stop it, but will anyone believe him?
