The Order of Assassins was a Nizari Isma'ili Shia Islamic military group established by Hasan-i Sabbah in 1090. Based in the Nizari Isma'ili state, which included a network of mountain fortresses in Persia and Syria, the group carried out notable assassinations in the Levant during the Crusades. They followed a strict policy of secrecy and are thought to have killed hundreds of individuals considered enemies of their state over 200 years.
