The book is a collaborative detective story in which the murder of Lord Comstock in his country house study leads to a complex investigation involving multiple famous detectives. Four well-known detectives—Mrs Adela Bradley, Sir John Saumarez, Lord Peter Wimsey, and Mr Roger Sheringham—are invited to solve the case, with each author writing a section using a detective not their own, resulting in parodies of the respective authors' styles.
