Mr Keeling, a fifty-year-old business man with strong Puritan principles, experiences a growing sense of dissatisfaction despite his prosperity and respected standing in the community. He forms a deepening emotional connection with a young woman who becomes his secretary, initially disliking him but gradually developing admiration and passionate love, which they both preserve as an unsullied memory after she leaves for London.
