About “Ay Carmela”
¡Ay, Carmela! is a play written by José Sanchis Sinisterra. Set during the early months of the Spanish Civil War, it follows the story of traveling players, Carmela and Paulino, who accidentally find themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time. The play premiered on 5 November 1987 in Zaragoza, directed by José Luis Gómez, who also portrayed Paulino. The play is heavily allegorical and takes its title from a popular song from the Spanish Civil War era. A film adaptation with the same name was released in 1990.
