About “Banalata Sen”
Banalata Sen is a Bengali lyric poem written in 1942 by Jibanananda Das, one of the most widely read and discussed poems in Bengali literature. The title refers to a female character named in the last line of each of the poem’s three stanzas. A draft of the poem was found that differs significantly from the final version. Jibanananda Das was known as a reclusive poet. Before the discovery of his diaries in the mid-1990s, it was thought he had no romantic connections. However, the name Banalata Sen, associated with a woman from Natore in the Rajshahi region, has come to symbolize mystery, beauty, and love. (Summary adapted from Wikipedia, CC BY-SA 4.0.)
