Barefoot Gen is a Japanese historical manga series written and illustrated by Keiji Nakazawa. Based on his experiences as a survivor of the Hiroshima atomic bombing, the story follows six-year-old Gen Nakaoka and his family in 1945. After the bombing, Gen and other survivors face the challenges of the aftermath. The series was published in magazines like Weekly Shōnen Jump from 1973 to 1987. It was adapted into three live-action films between 1976 and 1980 and two anime films by Madhouse in 1983 and 1986. A live-action television drama aired in Japan in August 2007.
