A cavalry unit crosses the Sahara to relieve a besieged French Foreign Legion fort, only to find it eerily silent. The fort is defended by dead men, and the commander, killed by a bayonet through the heart, holds a letter connecting the massacre to the long-ago theft of a sapphire called the Blue Water. The disappearance of the sapphire led to the self-exile of Beau Geste, one of three brothers. His brothers, John and Digby, refused to let him bear the blame alone and joined the Foreign Legion in North Africa. Their story, filled with suspense, betrayal, and bravery, has been adapted into several films and remains a popular adventure novel. The 1924 novel was written by P. C. Wren.
