About “Belenggu”

Doctor Sukartono, a dedicated physician, and his wife Tini, a strong and independent woman, struggle with a cold and distant marriage. Tini feels neglected by Sukartono's work and resists the traditional role of a self-sacrificing wife. Sukartono is confused by her resistance and turns to Rohayah, a woman who offers him the emotional support he lacks at home. This love triangle reflects the inner conflicts of Indonesians before the war and independence, as they tried to break free from traditional society but faced challenges in becoming a new kind of person. The novel shows the difficulty of moving forward while dealing with the lasting effects of the past. It is a 1940 novel by Armijn Pane.
