About “Between Shades of Gray”

Lina is a fifteen-year-old Lithuanian girl in 1941 who enjoys painting, drawing, and having crushes on boys. One night, Soviet officers invade her home, uprooting her family from their life. She is separated from her father and forced onto a crowded train bound for a work camp in Siberia. There, she and her mother and brother endure harsh conditions, working in the cold and struggling to survive. Lina uses her art to document her experiences, drawing secretly to send messages to her father in a prison camp. Her journey spans years and 6,500 miles, marked by suffering and resilience. Through strength, love, and hope, Lina survives. The story is written by Ruta Sepetys.
