About “bolo’bolo”
Bolo'bolo is a 1983 book by P.M., a pseudonym for Hans Widmer, that presents a vision for a utopian society. The book opens by criticizing the current global system, referred to as the Planetary Work Machine, which is seen as based on domination and has led to environmental destruction. The system is described as being controlled by corporations and governments that expand their power, suppressing alternatives. The author suggests undermining the system through subversion and the creation of new structures, termed "substruction." The book then outlines a future social order based on intentional communities called "bolos," each consisting of about 500 individuals, or "ibus." These communities emphasize self-sufficiency, hospitality, and a lifestyle centered on cooperation. Multiple bolos form the bolo'bolo network, where trade occurs through gifts, barter, or markets. The book promotes an anti-work and anti-state approach, intended to be put into practice.
