Bricks Without Straw is a fictionalized account of how Reconstruction was sabotaged, depicting the struggles of a group of North Carolina freedpeople. The story follows their efforts to build new lives by buying land, marketing crops, establishing a church and school, and voting for sympathetic politicians, until they are subjected to Klan terrorism and the rise of a white supremacist government that reduces them to neo-slavery.
