In Ireland in the early 1950s, Eilis Lacey leaves her home for America after struggling to find work. She takes a job in Brooklyn and moves into a crowded boarding house, where the landlady watches her closely and her fellow residents create a tense environment. Eilis feels isolated at first, but over time, she begins to adjust to her new life and finds a sense of happiness. As she falls in love, she receives news that brings her back to her hometown in Ireland. This return offers her new opportunities that clash with the life she built in Brooklyn.
