This version of Brut is a modern English verse rendering of the Middle English story of Britain, spanning from the legendary founding by Brutus, a supposed descendant of the Trojans, to the loss of land and prestige following the Saxon takeover. The narrative, based on the twelfth-century French octosyllabic couplets of Wace and ultimately derived from Geoffrey of Monmouth's Latin prose, combines elements of chronicle, romance, saint's life, and sermon.
