About “Carmen saeculare”
The Carmen saeculare is a Latin hymn composed by Horace on behalf of Augustus. It was performed by a group of young singers during the secular games held in 17 BC. The hymn is written in Sapphic meter, a style associated with the poetry of the time, and reflects themes found in the works of contemporary poets, especially Vergil.
