Sixteen-year-old Mary Makebelieve lives in a small room in the tenements of early twentieth-century Dublin with her mother, a charwoman. While her mother works cleaning the homes of the wealthy, Mary wanders the city and its parks, lost in daydreams, and her encounter with a policeman marks the beginning of her coming-of-age story, which blends elements of folk or fairytale with a psychological exploration of social relations.
