About “Child Is Born, A”
A Child Is Born is a 1965 photographic book by Swedish photojournalist Lennart Nilsson. It contains 160 pages with 31 chapters of photographs documenting the development of the human embryo and fetus from conception to birth. The images were accompanied by medical text written by Axel Ingelman-Sundberg and Claes Wirsén. The photographs were among the first to show developing fetuses to a wide audience. They gained significant attention after being published in Life magazine on April 30, 1965, with the entire print run of eight million copies selling out in four days. Nilsson won the American National Press Association Picture of the Year award for the images. The photographs were also included on the Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 space probes. The book has been involved in discussions about abortion and the beginning of life, and has been the subject of feminist critique. (Summary adapted from Wikipedia, CC BY-SA 4.0.)
