The book follows nineteen-year-old teacher Christy Huddleston as she moves from Asheville, North Carolina, to the isolated Smoky Mountain community of Cutter Gap. She faces resistance from residents who view her and her one-room school as a threat to their long-standing traditions, while her faith and emotions are tested by her relationships with two men who hold differing perspectives on caring for the Cove’s families.
