About “Cold Skin”
A steamship approaches a desolate island near the Antarctic Circle in the years after World War One. A young man travels there to take over as a weather observer, preparing to live alone for a year. Upon arrival, he finds no sign of the man he was sent to replace. Instead, he encounters a mad castaway who has seen something terrible but will not speak of it. The island offers only forests, a deserted cabin, rocks, silence, and the surrounding sea. As night falls, the isolation deepens. This is the setting of a 2002 novel by Albert Sánchez Piñol.
