Heart is a children's novel written by the Italian author Edmondo De Amicis, who was also a journalist, short story writer, and poet. The novel was inspired by his own children, Furio and Ugo, who were schoolboys at the time. Set during the Italian unification, the story includes patriotic themes. It was first published in Milan by Treves on October 18, 1886, the first day of school in Italy, and became immediately popular.
