About “De figuris Veneris”
De figuris Veneris is an anthology of ancient Greek and Roman texts focused on erotic themes. It was compiled and organized by the German classicist Friedrich Karl Forberg and first published in 1824. The work was written in Latin and Greek and served as a commentary on Hermaphroditus, an erotic poem sequence by Antonio Beccadelli, a Renaissance poet who lived from 1394 to 1471. While initially published as a commentary, De figuris Veneris was later released as an independent book. The collection presents its material objectively, grouping texts by subject matter.
